Pourerere Beach

Yes, you read that correctly, the name of the beach is Pourerere which probably means something in Maori but since I don’t have Internet at the moment I’ll have to look it up later on.

If you look on a map it looks like we’re very close to the coast so we finally (much too late, but better than never) set out to the beach. We decided to start with the one closer to home but it took us almost 1hour drive to get there. The outing turned out exactly as planned, not as we planned but as the weather man predicted and exactly when we’d walked down the entire length of the beach it started raining. I said that it wouldn’t last long but 30 minutes later  it was still raining. Then I said that luckily rain here is light, unlike the tropical downpours we used to get while in Singapore. And of course the rain starting pouring down. We gave up trying to run back to the car because it was too far and because we realised we didn’t really care if we got wet anyway. So we enjoyed a stroll down the empty beach while people sitting in their caravan on the side watched us curiously and waved.

The beach is huge and beautiful. Chances are, it is exactly like most other beaches in the area but that would only mean that the entire coast is as gorgeous as Pourerere is. It’s squeaky clean and the sand is hard which makes it very pleasant to walk on. There are a few small and simple houses along the beach and we had fun imagining ourselves living there. We imagined bringing our horses onto the beach and going for a long canter.

The best part was that apart for the few people staying cosy in their trailers the beach was empty, which is not all surprising giving the poor weather. We are slowly getting into winter which isn’t helping either, even though we still felt like taking a dip, since we were already soaked anyway.
