Churros de la mama

The two towns closest to the farm are Waipukurau and Waipawa, each about 30km from the farm. We go around once a week to get groceries and Internet to keep (a little) in touch. We don't usually stop to shop or stroll but prefer to go straight home to enjoy the farm. (We can’t get enough of it.) This time however we felt like a good hot coffee and stopped on a side road cafe called Expresso Central. When I heard the owner say ‘Hello’ as we walked in I immediately knew she wasn’t from New Zealand, and since we don’t come across many foreigners here I asked where she was from. She told me she was from Chile and that she had come to New Zealand 10 years ago with her husband for a holiday. They never left.

The cafe specialises in fresh/artisanal food and is locally famous for its churros. Their churros are home-made (her husband is a chef) which explains why they taste so much better than any other I have tried (that and the oozing caramel poured on the churros). I also ordered a Cortado tea which I was told is a Chilean tea. I’m not a huge fan of tea but I thought it’s not every day I can get a Chilean tea made by a Chilean lady in the heart of New Zealand’s East Coast. What a good idea it was, it was delicious!

The cafe is so successful that she is thinking of opening another one soon, but before that she hopes to take some time off to go back to Chile with her 2 year old son who has never been.
