Our Incredible Commute

I could probably write a book just on our trips to and back from the farm. Not only it is a beautiful journey which includes several kilometres along the Fateh Sagar lake but it takes us right at the heart of the Rajasthani country side. We know from sight most people we see in the village that we cross. We know where the different dogs live, we know which ones limp, which ones had babies and which ones lost theirs. We can even recognise cows (there’s a nice black and white one) and buffaloes (some have very funky horns!). Every morning we see the same grand mother sit outside her home, we see the same kids in uniform on their way to school. And of course they all know us, since we go through 4 times every day (to and fro in the morning and again in the afternoon) and we wave to each other.

The only thing that seems to be changing is the state of the road. They are building a drain which requires quite a bit of demolishing and reconstruction. It’s a VERY bumpy ride but I think we’ve mastered.

We have a 10 minutes walk at the end because we agree with the rickshawvala that it’s simply too bumpy. We met the farmer herding his buffaloes every morning. He’s the one from the standoff photos.

I never want to forget the feeling of these daily trips so I’ve filmed it. That way I can also share it with you and give you an idea of what it feels like.
