Underberg Mini-Open

We didn’t win the tournament but we came runners’ up. In any case, the winners definitely deserved it and it was a huge amount of fun to be able to play over the three day tournament.

The weather was outstanding - perhaps even too hot but after the previous rainy and cold days the heat was very welcome (maybe not so much for the horses, though). We played late morning and followed with the obligatory braai (BBQ). It’s impressive to see the polo club manned by volunteers: every one brings something to eat or to drink then organise themselves to get everything cleaned up afterwards. A remarkable example of community effort.

It’s really interesting to compare polo clubs in big cities versus in the country side. In the city, polo is associated with glamour and exclusivity. Spectators come dressed up and enjoy sipping on champagne during the chukkas. In the country side it’s much more relaxed. Most of the players are full time farmers who enjoy polo - as one would a tennis match - to exercise and have fun. Beware, however, it doesn’t mean they aren’t good players! Many of them have been playing for decades.

sweaty players!
