Our own little Holi gift

There's an area at the back of our condominium where all the staff comes through which is rather decrepit. It's a piece of dry bush area full of litter and rubbish but for some reason we like to go there and walk the dogs. We discovered, only a few days after moving in, that a street dog had given birth to a litter of 9 pups. She smartly hid them in a small hole and we would go and check on them every day.

We then went on holidays for 2 weeks and when we came back, there was only one puppy left. She looked weak so we gave her food every day. She would start barking in excitement every time she could hear us come, before hogging down the food.

This morning, however, when we went to see her we found her curved in a ball trembling. She did not react to our presence and didn't care when we put the food in front of her.

I immediately looked at Manjeev with that look he knows too well which means 'we can't just lave her here'.

We have the habit of bumping into animals in need on the worse days. In Udaipur, we found one dying stray when our car had broken down which meant we had to go back and forth to the vet with a disgusting looking dog in a cab. This time, it was Holi, a major festival in India when everything closes down for the day. Luckily, we tracked down a 24/7 emergency vet clinic and got her on drips. She was covered in fleas and ticks and smelled terrible. I think she must have been lying in her own diarrhoea for a while. Even the vet looked slightly grossed out.

She's now in our back room. We can't let her have any contact with our dogs and in any case, we must have minimum interaction with her since we need to drop her back where she came from once she's healthy.

I hope she makes it. If she does, we'll know what to name her: Holi.
